(All this week leading up to International Women's Day, The Big Story is featuring guest hosts leading conversations around issues of equality and sexism.)
Women's empowerment events are everywhere these days. They're meant as opportunities for women to build connections, share experiences, and leave with the motivation to accomplish great things. There's just one problem. While these events are often branded as "safe spaces", sometimes not all women feel welcome. Many of the events unknowingly cater to a specific group of women: white, cisgender, and non-disabled.
What mistakes do we make when we talk about women's empowerment? Who are we leaving behind? And how can we ensure every woman knows she has a seat at table?
