It's the SNC-Lavalin Controversy for Dummies. The latest chapter in the saga is a potentially months-long ethics commissioner’s inquiry, which was announced Monday. The Prime Minister promised to cooperate. Are you not entertained?!
Hyperbole aside: This is a serious issue that has the potential to hang a cloud over Justin Trudeau all the way through to October’s election and could potentially force us to address a government that may have subverted the rule of law. "Did the Prime Minister's office interfere in a justice decision?" is not a question you want to be answering in an election year.
It's also...a typical Canadian political scandal, which means it's polite and pedantic and likely to hinge on how you parse what someone said, depending on who you believe. But since you’re going to hear an awful lot about it, probably for an awfully long time, you’d do well to know the basics, and there’s nobody better for breaking down complex political machinations than the man who does it for a living.
