The Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service (NAPS) is the largest Canadian First Nation police force, protecting 35 First Nations in northern Ontario. In 2016, after years of coping with dangerous working conditions, patrolling without partners, and broken radios, officers threatened to disband if their force wasn't brought to the same standard as others in the country. Kyle Edwards of Maclean's visited some of the communities policed by NAPS. He shares what a day on the job is like for these officers, and the big changes that are expected to come early next year.
