A New Royal Baby Gives Brits A Chance To Talk About Race

April 8, 2019
|
Claire Brassard

Normally the reaction to a new addition to the royal family is quite predictable. When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's child enters the world this month, however, the British tabloids will have to grapple with the first hint of diversity in the royal bloodline. And if the coverage of the biracial couple's romance, engagement and pregnancy have been any indication, it will lead to some very awkward questions and comments.

Ebony-Renee Baker is a writer for FLARE.com and other publications. She's also half Jamaican and half Filipino, and she knows firsthand how mixed-race children can be subject to stereotypes and fetishization. And that's before being born into literally one of the whitest families on the planet. So how does a ravenous press, a history of colonization and a public that feels free to comment on the minutiae of every royal, never mind the newest baby, going to talk about the bundle of joy? We'll find out any day now.
