Decades after École Polytechnique, we’re still trying to change the conversation

December 6, 2019
|
Jordan Heath-Rawlings

As we do every year, today Canada will mourn the victims and survivors of a misogynist terror attack in Montreal in 1989. And we will try to talk about what's changed, and what hasn't and what we might be able to do about that. And that's important—but maybe we also need a better way to talk about the problem.

What if we called these acts terrorism? What if we asked men to write most of the columns about it every year, instead of women? We if we stopped using the passive voice when writing the headlines? What if we let the conversations be a little messier, and a little more honest about the scale of the problem?

GUEST: Sarah Boesveld (You can read some of Sarah's work on this problem right here.)
